Sent off with a Blessing

Uncle's Gift of Religious Beads

sunny 82 °F

After a week of blessing them and burning incense, Uncle gifted us the ceremonial beads we had chosen. Each had a different meaning.

Reggie chose the Lotus Blossom Seed Necklace - No matter how deep or troubled the water is below, the lotus flower always floats atop the water serene and beautiful.

I chose Shiva's Tears Necklace - When Pavaarti killed herself, Lord Shiva cried for days, his tears turning into these beautiful wrinkled seeds encrusted in gold. Shiva, the destroyer, preformed the funeral services and cut up her body scattering it to the four winds. Every place a part of her body landed, it became a sacred place. There is something so heartbreakingly beautiful about their love story. I decided upon these beads.

He blessed them and placed them over our heads before heading off with all the extended family for a puja at the temple.
