Mother of us All

Mark Twain on India

sunny 82 °F

“This is indeed India; the land of dreams and romance, of fabulous wealth and fabulous poverty, of splendor and rags, of palaces and hovels, of famine and pestilence, of genii and giants and Aladdin lamps, of tigers and elephants, the cobra and the jungle, the country of a thousand nations and a hundred tongues, of a thousand religions and two million gods, cradle of the human race, birthplace of human speech, mother of history, grandmother of legend, great-grandmother of tradition, whose yesterdays bear date with the mouldering antiquities of the rest of the nations—the one sole country under the sun that is endowed with an imperishable interest for alien prince and alien peasant, for lettered and ignorant, wise and fool, rich and poor, bond and free, the one land that all men desire to see, and having seen once, by even a glimpse, would not give that glimpse for the shows of all the rest of the globe combined.”

—Mark Twain, Following the Equator, 1897

India: Farewell Dinner

Last Night in Chennai

sunny 82 °F

It was a tearful goodbye - Indian songs, dance performances, and exchanged words of affection. We were looking around for our host family and didn't think they'd make it. It was getting late. Suddenly there was Manet and Suresh - and Aparna and Tarun. We all took to the stage and said our goodbyes. It was a good send off.

Spring Break in Goa

sunny 82 °F

It's Spring Break - we were on vacation. So I didn't take many photos. But we had an amazing time tanning on the beach, swimming in the waves, drawing henna, going to the night market, smoking hookah, and partying late into the night.

Still my favorite thing was watching the sun set from the stilted beds out on the beach. Just me, jessie, and alexia.

"Hey Mr. Sitar Man Play a Song for Me"

North Indian Jamming

sunny 82 °F

On the train ride back our Professor, Lee Rosenthal, met a Sitar Musician on the train. She invited him to play during our farewell orientation at Asha Nivas and he kindly agreed. It was a surprise we announced with a drum-roll. When he came out with his sitar and drone we were overjoyed. We fell into a trance for half an hour watching him play. It was brilliant.
